In April 2021, Esteban Bullrich, a former Senator
and Minister of Education of Argentina, was diagnosed with
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Inspired by his strength, his
family and friends decided to create a foundation to improve the
quality of life for those like Esteban who suffer from this
disease. The foundation aims to provide support and counseling,
conduct research, and educate people about ALS.
ALS is a degenerative disease of the nervous system with an
unknown cause. It affects the motor neurons in the brain and
spinal cord, resulting in the progressive paralysis of the muscles
in the limbs, as well as the muscles used for speaking,
swallowing, and breathing.
The exact causes of ALS are still unknown. Only 5 to 10% of ALS
cases are hereditary, while the remaining 90-95% occur
sporadically.
The prevalence of ALS is approximately 7 out of every 100,000
people.
In Argentina, an estimated 3,000 people are affected by ALS
each year.
